Questions
- What do FMCSA safety ratings mean?
- Satisfactory means no evidence of inadequate safety controls. Conditional means some controls fall short. Unsatisfactory means the carrier is unfit to operate. Most carriers, and almost every new authority, are simply 'not rated' because they have not had a compliance review.
- Is a 'not rated' carrier safe to use?
- Not rated is normal and not a red flag on its own. Check that authority is active, insurance is on file and the MCS-150 is current.
- What is an MCS-150 date?
- Carriers must update their MCS-150 registration at least every two years. A date older than that suggests a carrier that may have stopped running.
